About

Welcome to Cathy Gourley’s art website!  She has painted privately for 30+ years and has recently semi-retired as a psychologist. She is looking forward to sharing her art with others, and possibly teaching as well.  In her profession as a psychologist she studied how to promote mental well being, specifically noting that being engaged in creativity boosts mental sharpness, reduces stress, promotes deep thinking and can keep the brain biologically younger!

Throughout her history in art she has received training from some very respected artists, including Nancy Tankersley (Maryland), Lorenzo Chavez (Colorado) and Kim English (Colorado and North Carolina).  During those years she pursued her very strong interest of painting places she has visited - nature, birds, animals and people.  She typically takes pictures of things that are of interest to her and paints them upon returning home.  Currently, she is a member of the Highland Art Guild in Marble Falls and the Bee Cave Arts Foundation in Bee Cave, Texas.

Gourley notes one thing that is uniquely human - every person has their own mind and interpretation of what they see, and what they’re interested in.  So when people gather together to paint the same photo - each individual’s painting will uniquely reveal their interpretation.  That is a beautiful thing about creativity - each of us have our own minds and perspectives.  Art is a wonderful way for individuals to dive into their individual perceptions- a wonderful creative outlet.   Cathy hopes to inspire people to explore their creativity and find joy in their own artistic journey.

“If the imagination is shackled, and nothing is described but what we see, seldom will anything truly great be produced either in painting or poetry” (Thomas Cole to Asher B. Durand, 1838)

“We can ask no greater joy than to go gently through this place that has been given to us, and make something out of it. Not necessarily to fully understand it, for that might be an impossible task, but to honor it in our own way.” (Robert Genn, Canadian Painter and author of The Painters Keys,  May 15, 1935-May 27, 2014.)
